I was riding my bike along the beachfront path in Santa Monica. This swingset is at the Will Rogers State Beach, at the very north end where the bike path ends. In the summer it’s crammed with families and cars and kids escaping the heat of the valley, but on this day, in the early spring, it was foggy and cold and even the surfers were sitting in their cars, not yet willing to dive in.
I looped around the north end of the path and was headed back to the pier when I saw the swingset sitting there, all alone. There were footprints going off in a million directions, but none of them led to the lonely swingset. Beneath the swings, though, the sand seemed permanently worn by the feet of the thousands of kids who’d swung, the ocean rising and falling before them, in nicer weather. I took the photo, put the camera in my bag, and rode home, alone in the silent fog.
