After the night’s tedious journey off the northern coast, the sound of a voice, as salty as the sharp morning air, broke the early silence. “Ropes” was commanded and I abandoned a stiff sleep on their coarse curves. In the early glow of pale water and warming light, the captain stared at the twinkle of the arising shoreline and I began to unwrap them from their starchy slumber. We were almost home.
