During the building process, the blueprints for Brooks Hall got switched with those of a building being built on the campus of Yale. It wasn’t caught until the buildings were too far along to change. Brooks Hall was really intended for Yale and Yale has a building that matches architecturally with the neo-classical style of the University of Virginia.
Brooks Hall currently houses the Anthropology and Art departments. Engraved in the stone around the perimeter of the building are the names of prominent natural historians. Thankfully, there isn’t a better explanation for the mis-matched architectural style of the building and the legend lives on.
