Sharon Parmet was born in 1974 and grew up on Long Island, where the local school system was abnormally heavy into science education. This is where Parmet started to develop a deep curiosity and interest in science which has lasted until the present day. Parmet attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where she majored in English and biology, and went on to earn her master’s degree in scientific journalism from Boston University.
Parmet moved to Chicago in 1998, where she has worked in media relations at the University of Chicago Hospitals, Illinois Institute of Technology and the American Medical Association. She is currently Executive Director of the American Hearing Research Foundation, a small non-profit that raises money for hearing research.
Parmet continues to explore scientific and personal ideas and concepts through her art. She takes inspiration from the New York Times science section and other science news sources. She also draws from literature and her own life experiences. Parmet is also an avid birdwatcher, and active member of the Chicago Audubon Society. She has most recently traveled to Thailand and Belize for birding.
Parmet has shown her work at the Black Walnut Gallery, The Orphanage, Morpho Gallery, in the Version2008 arts festival and at Effe Leven Gallery- all in Chicago.
